During our trip to Montreal…

During our trip to Montreal, we discovered a city that feels like a blend of old-world Europe and modern North America—full of charm, color, warmth, and some of the most unforgettable food we’ve ever tasted. Every corner had something to admire, but a few highlights stood out above the rest.

Notre-Dame Basilica — Montreal’s Crown Jewel

If there’s one place that defines the emotional heart of Montreal, it’s the Notre-Dame Basilica.
Walking inside was like stepping into a celestial dream. The deep blues, radiant golds, and intricately carved wooden details glow under soft, dramatic lighting. The vaulted ceiling, dotted with stars, gives the entire space a sense of sacred nightfall.

What surprised us most wasn’t just its beauty—it was the atmosphere. Calm, reverent, and steeped in history, the basilica doesn’t just impress you… it moves you. It’s easily one of the most breathtaking structures in North America and worth the trip on its own.

Exploring Old Montreal

Wandering through Old Montreal felt like walking through a European film set—cobblestone streets, historic stone buildings, horse-drawn carriages, and charming cafés spilling onto the sidewalks.
The Old Port area offered beautiful river views, artists painting along the waterfront, and boutique shops perfect for slow browsing.

Every street had character, and every corner felt photogenic.

A big shout-out to M-Montreal for their excellent hotel stay. If you stay, don't forget to mention Vaina, Ornella, or Emma who were the most excellent hostess and hosts imaginable during our visit!

Mount Royal & Scenic Views

A trip to Montreal wouldn’t be complete without climbing (or driving) up Mount Royal. From the Kondiaronk Belvedere, the skyline stretches out between the river and the hills beyond. It’s peaceful, inviting, and a perfect reminder of how green and expansive the city really is.

The Cuisine — Montreal’s Flavorful Identity

Montreal’s culinary culture is one of its greatest treasures. The city is known for dishes that are hearty, comforting, and full of personality.

Classic Montreal Foods You Need to Try

  • Poutine — Crispy fries, fresh cheese curds, and hot gravy. Simple perfection.

  • Montreal Smoked Meat — Especially from Schwartz's Deli, where the peppery, melt-in-your-mouth slices are a rite of passage.

  • Montreal Bagels — Wood-fired, slightly sweet, and irresistibly chewy. St-Viateur and Fairmount are the iconic rivals.

Restaurants That Left a Lasting Impression

  • Joe Beef — Rich, indulgent dishes in a cozy, eccentric setting.

  • Au Pied de Cochon — The definition of decadent Québécois comfort food, especially the legendary foie gras poutine.

  • Toqué! — A refined dining experience showcasing the very best seasonal ingredients from around Quebec.

The People — Warm, Welcoming, and Proud of Their City

What truly elevated our trip was how friendly Montrealers were. Whether we attempted French or stuck to English, people greeted us with warmth and enthusiasm. Locals offered recommendations, chatted with ease, and made us feel like we belonged there.
